In 997, the counts of Barcelona, Ramon Borrell and Ermesinde of Carcassonne, handed over the church of Sant Miquel to Gombau de Besora, lord of the nearby castle of Montbui, along with his allod. Gombau founded the monastery there, which is recorded as having existed as early as 1006. The founder himself provided the new house with important assets and rights to ensure its subsistence.

In 1042, the same founder joined the monastery of Sant Miquel to Saint-Victor de Marseille (Bouches-du-Rhône), and from then on it became a priory dependent on the Provençal abbey. It was a small establishment and in the 15th century, it had only one or two monks who were also in charge of the nearby church of Sant Martí, outside the monastic enclosure. In 1567 it was secularised and the place passed into the hands of the bishopric of Girona, which looked after it and maintained the priory, at least nominally, until 1832. At the end of the 16th century, the path was made that leads to the cave where the monastery church is located, which until then had difficult access. It was expropriated in 1835 and passed into private hands. In modern times, the site has become a tourist attraction thanks to its location in a unique spot.
