The Abbey of Notre-Dame de Cagnotte was likely founded at the end of the 9th century. Due to a lack of documentation, it is difficult to delve into the details of its history. For a long time, this monastic house maintained a close relationship with the Viscounty of Orthe, which served as its main protector. In 1122, Viscount Raymond-Sanche restored the monastery, and its church became the burial site of the viscounts.

During this period, the Benedictine community adopted Cistercian customs, although it never fully integrated into the Cistercian Order. This change was temporary, as the monks later returned to the Rule of Saint Benedict. In 1168, the priory of Saint-Bernard de Bayonne was founded from the monastery of Cagnotte. By 1245, this priory had become a Cistercian nunnery.

Cagnotte suffered the effects of the Hundred Years' War and the Wars of Religion, which left the monastery in decline. Nevertheless, it managed to survive precariously until the French Revolution. Today, the church, now serving as a parish and significantly altered, still stands, along with some of the monastic buildings that were converted into a farm.
