In 1318, King James II of Aragon granted a plot of land near the castle of Cervera to the Dominican friars for the construction of a convent. It is possible that building work did not begin until 1358, after a request was made to exchange the site for a more favourable location. Although the necessary permission was obtained, the relocation was never carried out. The house was dedicated to Sant Pere Màrtir, although it is more commonly known as the convent of Sant Domènec.

Construction extended over nearly a century. According to tradition, this was the site of a vision of Saint Dominic to Saint Vincent Ferrer in 1409, during the latter’s stay at the convent while preaching in the city. It was a large and significant establishment. Despite periods of decline, the community maintained notable vitality. In the 16th century, a new chapter house and dormitory were built, and in the 18th century, various improvements were made, especially to the church. In 1810, during the Peninsular War, the convent suffered the loss of its archive and other valuable items. In 1835, it was affected by the disentailment, which led to its abandonment and plundering. In recent times, restoration work has been undertaken to preserve the remaining structures and assign them new uses.
