Monastery of Santa Clara of Monforte de Lemos
Mosteiro das Clarisas / Inmaculada Concepción de Monforte
(Monforte de Lemos, Lugo)
The foundation of the Monastery of Santa Clara de Monforte de Lemos was promoted by the Counts of Lemos, Pedro Fernández de Castro (1576-1622) and his wife, Catalina de la Cerda y Sandoval (1580-1648). In 1622, the first nuns of the community arrived in Monforte de Lemos and settled in a provisional building. These nuns came from the monastery of the Ascensión of Lerma, a foundation promoted by Catalina's family.
The Count died in the same year of its inauguration. His widow professed as a nun in 1634 in the same monastery under the name of Catalina de la Concepción. In the same year the foundation stone was laid for a new convent, which was inaugurated in 1646, with Catalina as abbess of the community. Today, the monastery is still inhabited by the Poor Clare nuns, despite the period of decadence it suffered in the 19th century due to the disentailment. With the works of art that have been collected over time, the remarkable Museum of Sacred Art has been formed, inaugurated in 1977, which reflects the spirit of the founders, renowned patrons of artists, especially writers of their time. Pedro Fernández de Castro himself is the author of an extensive literary work.
