San Salvador de Lérez is an ancient monastery. It is recorded that in the year 916, Abbot Guntado received privileges and exemptions from Ordoño II, according to a document that may be apocryphal. In 1169, Fernando II ceded it to the mitre of Santiago. Throughout the centuries, up until the 13th century, various donations and privileges granted by different monarchs in favor of the monastery are documented.
During a visit in the late 15th century, records indicate that the establishment housed five monks and an abbot, who was deposed due to the community’s inappropriate conduct. This dismissal led to a legal dispute that was not resolved until 1540, when the abbot resigned in exchange for a lifelong pension. In 1570, the monastery was integrated into the Congregation of Valladolid and converted into a Benedictine college. With the disentailment, the monastery was suppressed and expropriated in 1835. A former monk took charge of the church, which became a parish. The monastic structures and the church were completely rebuilt from the 16th century onwards, although some fragmentary inscriptions from its earliest period are preserved.
