According to tradition, a monastery was founded at this site during the time of Charlemagne. However, it is believed to have disappeared due to Norman incursions. The location was later restored during the era of Abbot Hugh of Cluny (1024–1109), who promoted the construction of a new church and the establishment of a Cluniac priory.

In 1077, a papal bull confirmed the foundation of this priory, marking the first known document that references it. In the 13th century, the church underwent significant renovations, altering its original structures. In 1569, the Wars of Religion caused extensive damage to the site, including destruction and a fire. Despite this, the priory managed to recover partially until its suppression in 1788.

The church retained its status as a parish, while the priory’s buildings passed into public ownership until they were destroyed by a fire in 1837. During the 19th century, the church was extensively restored, significantly altering its character by removing medieval elements and adding new Neo-Romanesque structures. In the early 20th century, another fire necessitated further reconstruction efforts.
