Monastery of San Miguel de Breamo
Canonry of San Miguel de Breamo
(Pontedeume / Puentedeume, A Coruña)
The first record of the Monastery of San Miguel de Breamo dates back to the year 1169, in a document that mentions its prior, Xoán Ovéquiz. In 1397, it is recorded as an Augustinian canonry, although there has been speculation about a possible eremitic origin and the prior existence of a Benedictine community.
Historical references to this site are very scarce. Among them is a dispute with the Cistercian monastery of Santa María de Sobrado dos Monxes. It was a modest house that fell victim to the ambitions of the local nobility. It is believed to have possibly disappeared during the last quarter of the 16th century, although it retained the title of priory, which continued to manage its assets until the late 18th century. Later, it was converted into a hermitage. Today, only the church remains, featuring a single nave, a transept, and a chevet with three semicircular apses. There is an inscription dated 1187, although its construction is thought to have extended into the early 13th century.
