Collegiate Church of Saint-Pierre d'Évaux
Prévôté d’Évaux / Evausense / Evanum / Evahon
(Évaux-les-Bains, Creuse)
The Augustinian canonry of Évaux was established next to the tomb of Saint Marien, a hermit who lived between the 5th and 6th centuries. He had first entered a monastery but later withdrew to live in solitude and practice eremitism. He is believed to have died in 513.
The community of canons is known from the year 936, when its provost, Widradus, is mentioned in a donation to the canonry. There is very little information about the house, apart from a few references to the involvement of its priors in various events. In 1158, Évaux was the subject of a papal bull issued by Pope Adrian IV. In 1264, it became linked to the canonry of Saint-Amable in Riom (Puy-de-Dôme). In 1300, the relics of Saint Marien were placed in a silver reliquary, preceding the current one from the 17th century.
The site was probably affected by the Hundred Years' War. Jean II de Bourbon (c. 1413–1485) served as commendatory provost of the house. Much of the church was rebuilt in the 15th century, and later its vaults had to be reconstructed after they collapsed between 1657 and 1660. In 1634, the canonry joined the Congregation of France (Sainte-Geneviève of Paris), a situation that lasted until its suppression in 1729, when its assets were transferred to the Sainte-Chapelle of Riom.
The notable church of Saint-Pierre still stands, a Romanesque construction with earlier origins. It has undergone significant modifications due to various restorations and reconstructions. The most remarkable element is the porch-tower preceding the western façade, built between the 11th and 13th centuries, with additions from the 17th century. The church was damaged by a fire in 1942, which destroyed a remarkable carved wooden interior (boiserie), but has since been restored. The 17th-century reliquary of Saint Marien was saved from the fire and is still preserved.
