According to legend, this monastery was founded thanks to the will of Count Munazán, who arrived at this place while chasing a wild boar. However, there are no documents available that could provide information about that foundational period. Although it has been attributed considerable antiquity, it is not until the year 1170 that the place is mentioned in documents, and by 1182 the name of an abbot is already recorded in a donation in favour of the monastery.
The loss of documentation means that very little information is available about the monastery. However, there is an inscription dated 1205 that marks the beginning of the construction of the current church, and it is perhaps then that monastic life became regularized. It must have been a modest establishment, with a local domain and a few dependent churches. The monastery went through a period of decline, with commendatory abbots, until in 1531 it came under the influence of the Congregation of San Benito de Valladolid, which attempted to rectify the situation. In 1544, a papal bull from Pope Paul III turned this abbey into a priory of San Salvador de Celorio. Of the monastery, practically only the church remains, built in the 13th century.
