The Cistercian monastery of Notre-Dame de La Bénisson-Dieu was founded in 1138 from the abbey of Clairvaux (Aube). Tradition holds that Bernard of Clairvaux (1090–1153) took a direct part in its establishment: he visited the site and sent the first Cistercian community there, under the leadership of Alberic, who became its first abbot.

The foundation initially received support from minor local lords, a circumstance that prevented it from enjoying an easy development in its early years. In addition, the new abbey became involved in disputes with Saint-Martin de Savigny (Rhône) owing to the proximity of the priory of Neuilly, which depended on that house. These early difficulties were partly overcome thanks to the support of the counts of Forez, who made numerous donations to the abbey. During the thirteenth century it experienced a period of prosperity, although a decline began towards the end of that century. Later, during the instability caused by the Hundred Years’ War, the monastery is said to have been fortified.

Elsewhere in the same region of Forez stood the Cistercian nunnery of Notre-Dame de Bonlieu, dependent on the abbey of Mazan (Ardèche). Because of the distance between these two houses, La Bénisson-Dieu assumed responsibility for this priory in 1216. The last regular abbot of the abbey was Pierre de La Fin (1460–1504), who was also abbot of Pontigny (Yonne) and who retained the governance of La Bénisson-Dieu as a commendatory abbot. Important works of improvement were carried out under his authority. After his death, his brother Gilbert was appointed as the new commendatory abbot.

The last abbot of the house was Claude de Nérestang, brother of Françoise de Nérestang, abbess of Notre-Dame de Mègemont (Puy-de-Dôme), also of the Cistercian Order. This relationship facilitated an exchange of communities between Mègemont and La Bénisson-Dieu, with the aim of providing better conditions for the nuns. The male community moved to Auvergne, while the nuns took possession of La Bénisson-Dieu, a process completed in 1612.

The house remained under the governance of members of the Nérestang family until 1675. The arrival of the female community was accompanied by a major programme of reform of the conventual buildings, as well as by a renewal of observance and customs, marked by greater austerity. Further works were carried out during the eighteenth century, until monastic life came to an end with the Revolution. Most of the buildings were lost, and today only the church, deprived of its chevet, and the bell tower survive.
